EU launches all-electric vehicle project

The European Green Cars Initiative has launched a project intended to explore new technology paths towards the energy efficiency, functionality and usability of electric vehicles that are complementary to future advances in the performance of battery cell technology.

According to consortium members, the objectives of the Information and Communication Technologies for the Full Electric Vehicle (ICT4FEV) project consist of building an R&D community, editing a European roadmap, recommending standards and regulations, and establishing a European organisation for electric mobility.

The consortium is led by VDI/VDE-IT and includes CRF, Siemens, NXP, EADS and AVL List. Another twenty companies in the automotive, energy and ICT sectors have agreed to contribute to ICT4FEV as associated partners.

The ICT4FEV project is funded by the European Commission's Directorate General of Information Society and Media. It started on 1 May 2010 and has a planned duration of 24 months.
