New from Elektor: Wireless Toolbox DVD

cabled’ in consumer electronic and the PC scene in particular. Just when we all thought radio was a thing of the past, it came back with a vengeance and is now carrying data instead of just audio or TV signals.

Wireless is inevitably tied to RF design technology, a nightmare for many electronics designers who like to stick to DC, programming and the odd signal reaching up to a megahertz or so. Fortunately much of the black magic associated with RF in connection with data transmission can be left to specialized designers who over the past years have come up with small, cheap and off the shelf modules, making the RF link transparent.

The choice of modules currently depends on the transmission distance: a few centimeters using Near Field Communication (NFC) or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), tens of metres with the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or ZigBee systems, or indeed thousands of kilometres using a module for receiving GPS data.

In accordance with the principle of the Elektor Toolbox series, we’ve brought together technical documentation (spec. sheets, application notes, user guides, etc.) on various devices according to the frequency and/or protocol used. All of the documents are PDF files. Browsing around the DVD is made easy by an HTML menu. Finally, this Wireless Toolbox DVD contains a collection of articles on this topic (RFID, xBee, DCF77, GPS, infrared, etc.) that have appeared in Elektor magazine.

This DVD packs 1.2 gigabytes worth of technical documents!

New book from Elektor: ARM Microcontrollers Part 1

The ARM controller is a rising star by all definitions. If you want to learn C and how to use an mbed ARM microcontroller in an easy and fun way without the need for cumbersome software installations, this the perfect book to jump the ARM bandwagon, specifically the popular NXP LPC1768 micro.

The projects in this book aim at beginners in C and ARM microcontrollers. That doesn't mean the projects are simple, but it does mean that they are easy to understand. For example USB communications is discussed, a subject that’s made easy enough by the mbed to allow its use in a beginners book.

The mbed NXP LPC1768 uses cloud technology, a revolutionary concept in software development. Consequently you do not need to install software on your PC in order to program the mbed!

The only thing you need is a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, and a USB port on your PC. You can get access to your project from any PC anywhere in the world and continue working on it. When you are done a few simple mouse clicks transfer the program to your mbed hardware. Of course you can optionally download the projects and store them on your own PC.

Features of this book

- Learn how to program an mbed ARM microcontroller using cloud technology. No complicated software installation on your PC needed.

- Learn programming in C by doing fun and interesting projects. No previous experience or knowledge required.

- Examples of projects in this book: flashing light, timer, light activated switch, digital thermometer, people detector, USB communication, talking microcontroller, debugging, sound switch, and much more -- 35 projects in all.

- Examples of C subjects in this book: variables, commands, functions, program execution, pointers (introduction).

What you need

- A PC with a USB port, internet connection and a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.

- The free download that contains for example the project source codes.

- The hardware introduction package to get started quickly, available from Elektor.

The book and the associated Starter Kit are available at a special bundle price

New from Elektor: E-blocks Fastrax GPS board

The latest addition to Elektor’s wide range of E-blocks allows GPS functionality to be added to microcontrollers and other processors that do not have GPS peripherals embedded into them. This innovative addition to the E-blocks range enables microntrollers to measure altitudes of 300 m (900 ft) to 18,000 m (54,000 ft), as well as velocities up to 515 m/s.

The board uses a state of the art UP500 GPS module from Fastrax. The GPS module uses several orbiting satellites to calculate its position. Once an initial position has been acquired the GPS receiver continues to send position information directly to the microcontroller ready for further processing. The GPS is also capable of streaming universal time and date data (UTC) directly to your microcontroller for use in your application.

New book from Elektor: Experiments with Digital Electronics

Digital electronics is central to modern technology. This book presents fundamental circuits using gates, flip-flops and counters from the CMOS 4000 Series. Each of the 50 experiments has a circuit diagram as well as a detailed illustration of the circuit’s construction on solderless breadboard. A kit of parts to support the experiments is available (third link below).

Learning the fundamentals on digital designing is best done using practical experiments. Building the digital circuits presented in the book is sure to improve your knowledge and will be fun to boot. Many of the circuits presented here have practical real-life applications. With a good overview of the field, you’ll be well equipped to find simple and cost-effective solutions for any application.

The book is targeted essentially at students, trainees and anyone with an interest in and requiring an introduction to digital control electronics. Moreover, the knowledge gleaned here is the foundation for further projects in the field of microcontrollers and programming.

The book is available from week # 45 (November 8-14)

TIP: Also order the 50-piece starter kit and get started straight away with the experiments described in the book!

New book from Elektor: ARM Microcontroller Interfacing

An increasing number of embedded application developers and other enthusiasts are switching to ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) microcontrollers and the associated platforms created by communities and leading chip manufacturers like Atmel. Elektor was the first magazine to publish an ARM development system for home construction and use back in 2005.

In this new book from Elektor, you learn to interface and program hardware devices in a wide range of useful applications, using ARM7 microcontrollers and the C programming language. Examples covered in full detail include a simple LED to a multi-megabyte SD card running the FAT file system.
In the book, a 32-bit ARM7 microcontroller is used in the numerous interfacing and software examples, which are written in the C programming language. Free or open source software is applied throughout and all programming tools can be downloaded from the Internet.

While exploring ARM programming techniques, you are interfacing to LEDs, transistors, optocouplers, relays, solenoids, switches, keypads, LCD displays, seven segment displays, DC motors, stepper motors, external analogue signals using the ADC, RS-232, RS-485, TWI, USB, SPI and SD memory cards.

A chapter on more advanced ARM microcontrollers is included with an overview of some of the latest ARM microcontrollers and their features.

An as introductory offer, 13% discount and free postage is granted to Elektor magazine subscribers until September 10, 2010. Finally, a tip: order this book along with other Elektor products and get free shipping on the whole order!
