ZigBee Input Device standard released

The new ZigBee Input Device standard, recently released by the ZigBee Alliance, is designed to give consumers improved options for using wireless mice, touchpads, keyboards, wands and remote control pointers at greater distances and even in nearby rooms. It replaces 30 year-old infrared (IR) technology with a standard, robust radio frequency (RF) solution.

The ZigBee Input Device standard enables innovative two-way communication between devices, allowing them to provide more features than current devices. Furthermore, devices built using  the standard will require significantly fewer batteries during their lifetime than IR devices with comparable functionality, making them greener.

The new standard also incorporates innovative functions for these devices, including the ability to define special functions and enhanced performance beyond the standard behaviour of a mouse, keyboard, or similar input device; support for operation with existing devices equipped with ZigBee Remote Control capability (including computers); native support for popular multi-touch and gesture commands, including pinch and rotation for touchpad devices; simple pushbutton pairing for user-friendly operation; smart over-the-air updating and programming options that allow new features to be added to devices at any time.

The new standard, the second in a series developed specifically for ZigBee Rf4CE specification, is now available to all ZigBee Alliance members.
