EuroCloud research project receives EU funding

The European Commission is partially funding a collaborative research project studying the use of ARM processor architecture in data centres and the impact this may have on reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint of data centres. The project, called EuroCloud, is being conducted by ARM, Nokia, Imec, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the University of Cyprus.

The project aims to validate the proposition that building data centre server computers around low-power processors and 3D chip packaging can deliver a significant improvement in cost and energy efficiency compared to incumbent server platforms. The project will focus on using the Cortex-A9 MPcore multicore processor along with a 3D DRAM structure and packaging technology to create
